The Passive House concept represents today's highest energy standard with the promise of slashing the heating and cooling energy consumption by an average of 80% - 90%.
A Passive House is a supper insulated, virtually air-tight building that is primarily heated by internal gains from people, electrical equipment, and by passive solar gains through windows and doors. Any remaining heating and cooling demand is provided by an extremely small mini split heat pump. Fresh air is provided by an ERV (energy recovery ventilator) system. ERVs provide fresh air while recovering the exiting conditioned air at approximately 85% efficiency. With the addition of a properly sized small solar array the home can easily reach the level of "Net Zero". The end result is a comfortable, energy bill free building that has excellent indoor air quality.
